A New Tool to Aid in the Prevention of Periodontal Disease in
dogs
A new vaccine
has been produced to aid in the prevention of periodontal disease.
The vaccine was developed from the bacteria most commonly isolated
in dogs with periodontal disease. In controlled studies the
vaccinated dogs showed statistically less bone changes than those
dogs not vaccinated.
It has been
estimated that 85% of dogs have periodontal disease by three years
of age. There is statistical data that shows a strong correlation
between periodontal disease and pathological changes occurring in
other organs such as the kidney, liver and heart.
Gingivitis is a
reversible disease that if left untreated, progresses to
periodontal disease. Unfortunately, once periodontal disease is
present it cannot be reversed without extensive and expensive
treatment.
Good home
dental care along with professional cleanings has been the mainstay
for keeping our canine friend's mouths healthy. Now that a new
vaccine is available we have an additional tool to help fight
peridontal disease. A booster follows the initial vaccination in
three weeks. The dog is then vaccinated on a yearly basis.

vaccine.
